20 years have passed since Azerbaijan’s Khojavand region was occupied by Armenia.

The Khojavand district was occupied by Armenia on the 2nd of October, 1992.

As a result of the Armenian occupation, 1783 houses in Azerbaijani-populated ten villages were burnt and all the houses robbed. The occupation destroyed 47 industrial, 144 agricultural units. Khojavand residents gave 145 martyrs, among whom 13 were women and 13 children. More than 300 lost their health and became disabled, 243 children lost one of the parents, 68 women lost their husbands. Out of 110 hostages having been captured at different times, 49 were killed and victimized by the Armenian aggressors, 3 children lost both parents.

Azerbaijani people appeal to the international community and demand a just solution to the the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, stop the using of double standards towards Azerbaijan and recognize violation of rights of over one million Azerbaijani refugees and internally displaced persons.

What are there in Khojavand district of Azerbaijan?

Khojavand is considered one of the ancient dwelling places in the world.

Azikh cave

Azikh is the largest cave in Azerbaijan, located in Khojavand Region, at a height of 2,953 feet (900 meters). Excavations of the cave started in 1960, and uncovered many artifacts from the Paleolithic Period, including ancient human remains. In 1968, a 350,000-year-old fragment of a lower jaw belonging to an ancient man was found as well as the ten distinct cultural layers evidencing the human inhabitation in the area.

Amaras monastery built in the village of Sos at the beginning of the IV century of our era is one of the most interesting buildings in this district. The monastery for centuries was cathedral church of the Caucasian Albania. Monastery school was opened in the V century. There are “Rtis” Castle located in the village of Tug , belonging to I-VIII centuries, “ERGUNESH” tower, “Albanian” temple (in 1241) in the village of Boyuk Taghlar, “Red” temple (X century) in the Tug village in the territory of the region. All these monuments were destroyed as a result of Armenian occupation (October 2, 1992).

Ecology and Natural Resources Ministry’s Center for Assessment of Destructive Impact on Environment and Natural Resources in the Occupied Azerbaijani Territories revealed some facts on the ecological situation of Khojavand region occupied by Armenia.

The ministry’s press service reports that narcotic substances grown in the region are sold to various countries, arson is often committed in these territories, fauna and flora is destroyed. Trees used for heating materials are cut and taken to Armenia and sold to other countries. According to the reports received by the center, 47 kinds of plants and 19 kinds of trees burned. Oak trees were cut in Khojavand forest, natural forest on the banks of the Khojashin river, trees (fig trees, mulberry trees, pomegranate trees, haw tree, oak trees, elm trees) in 6000ha area in Kurapatkin were cut.
