Rauf Abdurehmanli, chairperson of Sheki city branch of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA) was arrested yesterday in Sheki city and sentenced to 20 days in jail. It is worthy to note that two more members (Ali Abdullayev and Mubariz Abdulkerimov) of the same branch are already in prison, each serving 30 days prison term. More on them below.

Sheki branch has been very active in plastering the political prisoners’ posters’ in the bust stops and other areas to raise awareness. This activism brought to thier arrest and sentencing to prison terms.

The crackdown in Azerbaijan continues and the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan is the mostly suffered.

Two more arrested from the same branch two weeks ago

Mubariz Abdulkarimov, deputy-chairperson of Sheki Branch of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA) and Ali Abdullayev, member of PFPA’s Supreme Council (PFPA’s parliament like structure) was sentenced to 30 days of administrative arrest in jail. It is worthy to say that Ali Abdullayev was also arrested last month on charges of hooliganism and disobeying police.

The reason behind the arrests is the fact that they plastered on January Khadija Ismaylova’s posters in Sheki city’s bus stops and residential buildings. The slogans read: “Free Khadija!” in Azerbaijani and English languages.

On January 15 was arrested Abdulkerimov.

Both prisoners rejected the state lawyers to defend them. The chairman of the Sheki Branch Rauf Abdurahmanly was also summoned to the police station, but was later released.

The court charged Ali Abdullayev under the Article 310 (non-subordination to police) and Abdulkerimov – under Article 296 (disorderly conduct).

PFPA is seriously concerned of the arrests. Twenty five days back party’s Sabirabad branch activists were arrested and jailed.

The party calls on the authorities to stop repressive actions against the activists and open a way for democratic development. Now the country moves towards authoritarianism and almost all the democratic growth have been killed and the country moves back and back into chaos and uncertainty.
