Pro-democracy Public Chamber of Azerbaijan held its next session and decided for the protest rally in Baku on April 8 and demand the release of political prisoners. The protest rally will almost coincide with the last year’s rally in Baku on April 2, inspired by the Arab Spring, which voiced demands for democratic reforms, and when 17 activists were sentenced to different terms of imprisonment.

Currently, 12 of them are still in custody and  have been recognized by the Amnesty International “prisoners of conscience”. Public Chamber adopted a statement and indicated  the continuation of restrictions on freedom of assembly by the authorities. Since its set up at the end of 2010 the Public Chamber has been demanding to stop repression, and to release all political prisoners.

The chairman of Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan, member of the Coordinating Council of the Public Chamber Mr. Ali Karimli and Chairman of Musavat party, member of the Coordinating Council of the Public Chamber Mr. Isa Gambar criticized the current standing of the Azerbaijani authorities and called upon the international community to mobilize their efforts for the release of political prisoners – Arif Hajili, Shahin Hasanli, Sahib Karimov, Mahammad Majidli, Babek Hasanov, Elnur Majidli, Tual Abbasli, Elnur Israfilov, Rufat Hajibayli, Ulvi Guliyev, Human Rights Defender Vidadi Isgenderov, Zulfugar Eyvazli, Arif Alishli, Ahad Mammadli, who were arrested before, during and after the peaceful demonstration held by the Public Chamber in Baku on April 2 of 2011. They also noted Ruslan Bashirli, Avaz Zeynalli, and Bakhtiyar Hajiyev, who are also in custody due to the political reasons, all of whom were subsequently sentenced by the unlawful decision of the court.
