Parallels between Macron’s recent PM pick and his earlier missteps

French President Emmanuel Macron’s recent pick for Prime Minister has reignited criticism over his approach to foreign policy, particularly in the context of sensitive geopolitical issues. He had made the similar policy mistakes towards Armenia-Azerbaijan war over Karabakh. He had fully supported the Armenian separatism in Azerbaijan’s internationally recognized territories.

It is time now to draw parallels between Macron’s recent appointment and earlier missteps, where his biased action in the Karabakh issue, especially during Azerbaijan’s 2020 liberation war against Armenian offensive, raised eyebrows. I would argue that Macron’s stance wavered between maintaining France’s role as a peace broker and the need to support Armenia, home to a significant Armenian diaspora in France.

This inconsistency mirrors the ongoing debate around his PM pick, who is seen as possibly aligning with Macron’s complex approach to international crises—appearing neutral while inadvertently alienating key allies.

This reluctance to take a just stand on Karabakh has strained and almost zeroed France’s relations with #Azerbaijan and affected the trust of other powers in the region, as well as Macron’s credibility in defending minority rights and self-determination in its colonies across the planet.

Now I wonder if the new PM will follow in Macron’s footsteps, further complicating France’s position on issues like relations with Azerbaijan, or if they will carve out a more assertive and consistent approach. Either way, the stakes for French diplomacy remain high.
