Among the pardoned there are two political prisoners: the head of the youth organization “Yeni Fikir” (“New Generation”) Ruslan Bashirli and Elnur Israfilov.
Bashirli was sentenced in 2005 to seven years on charges with a coup d’etat. More on his case you can read here: http://www.isn.ethz.ch/isn/
Israfilov was sentenced to three years of imprisonment due to the rally on April 2, 2011.
Most politicians and human rights defenders expected a full pardon. The list of the pardoned lacked the names of those 16 arrested last year (but Elnur Israfilov, who wrote a letter of regret and request to be pardoned), whom Amnesty International enlisted as prisoners of conscience.
The chairman of Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan, member of the Coordinating Council of the Public Chamber Mr. Ali Karimli and Chairman of Musavat party, member of the Coordinating Council of the Public Chamber Mr. Isa Gambar issued a statement expressing their concerns and regret over the list of pardoned, which lacked the names of the prisoners of conscience.
Mr. Ali Karimli expressed his sadness and joy: “On one hand, I’m happy that Elnur Israfilov and Ruslan Bashirli were freed from the hostage of the authorities, on the other hand regret that prisoners of conscience remained in the custody. Irrespective of the calls from the international community, international organizations and the Azerbaijani society, Ilham Aliyev preferred to keep his opponents in the custody. It seems he bears a strong malice to his rivals and sacrifices the national interests to his anger”.
He further said that critics of the government will increase and it will face reproaches. “The coming months will also follow the increased number of critics. Ilham Aliyev himself creates such a condition that the international media cover the prisoners, human rights, the challenges of democracy instead of “Eurovision” Song Contest. They have chosen their way and it leads them to precipice. Now, no cosmetic surgery may help the incumbent regime”.
Mr. Isa Gambar expressed his sadness over the pardon and considered it as a next fault step of the authorities: “This is a very big wrong-doing of Ilham Aliyev. Wrong-doings takes Azerbaijan and the government itself to a darker stage. I think that local and international community won’t put up with this. Our fight for the release of our friends of conscience will continue”.
Dear all,
We hope, you will continue your efforts to put a pressure on the authorities for the soonest release of the remaining prisoners of conscience.
